Veritas Box-Maker's Plough Plane
Product Description
This tool has been missing for a very long time. It is based upon the Record 043 Plough Plane which was produced during the heydays of British manufacturing.
An ideal tool for making grooves in boxes and small drawers, this compact plough plane excels at precise grooving and beading applications on small workpieces.
5 1/2" (140mm) long cast-iron body and weighing just 1 lb 7 oz (650 grams), it is highly maneuverable and comfortable to use. Supplied with a 1/4" (6.3mm) wide lapped A2 tool steel blade, it also works with any of the other Veritas plough plane blades from 1/8" to 3/8" wide (or metric blades from 4mm to 10mm), including the three Imperial sizes of beading blades, all offered separately. A brass knob secures the blade from the side to ensure vertical alignment with the skate, and another holds it from the top to lock the depth setting.
The 5" long fence has a face made of torrefied maple, which is fitted to a cast-iron base mounted on double guide rods. It can be adjusted to offset a groove up to 2 1/2" from the edge of your work, and a small recess in the wooden face of the fence lets you cut rabbets narrower than the blade width. The fence’s ergonomic design helps keep the plane firmly registered against the workpiece with a comfortable, natural grip. For improved registration on wide boards, the wooden fence can be easily replaced with a larger user-made fence extension.
The adjustable shoe acts as a depth stop, permitting cuts up to 3/8" deep. It has relieved edges to avoid marking your work, and locks in position with a knurled brass knob.
The plane is machined with a 45° blade bed, and the body is sculpted to fit comfortably in the palm. Both right-hande and left-hand orientation versions are made, and although the choice is often based on which of your hands is dominant, neither model is exclusively for right- or left-handed users. They are, in fact, complementary, since having both lets you handle any grain direction.
Additional blades in Imperial or metric sizes are available separately, sold individually. For blades 1/4" (6mm) or larger, left-handed or right-handed blades can be used interchangeably; for blades 3/16" (5mm) or smaller, choose handed blades to match the plane’s orientation.
