Oscar Rush Hand Forged Edge Tools
Oscar Rush - Suffolk based toolmaker
" Being based just 20 minutes away from Classic Hand Tools, I'm really pleased to be working with them to bring my range of woodcarving tools to the wider market.
The aim for my tools is to always be using really great materials, from choosing the grade of steel all the way to the choice of leather, and bring them up to create a tool intended to perform really well.
I'm a one man operation, with the aim of keeping every part of the making process in house. Everything is forged, handled and sheathed by hand by myself.
I'm looking forward to continuing to work alongside Classic Hand tools, and continuing to expand the tools I have on offer. "
All Oscar's adzes and axes are made with a good quality spring steel (Grade 735A51). Spring steel is a particular type of carbon steel, primarily composed of iron (Fe) and carbon (C) but with special alloying elements that improve its spring properties. Overall spring steel has greater yield strength than ordinary carbon steel from which a lot of adzes and axes are made. Hardening is achieved using a kiln and an oil quench.
All axe bevel angles are 30 degrees included (i.e 15 degrees each side) which is pretty standard.
The handles - these are made by Oscar from kin dried ash. The handles are faceted and comfortable in the hand. The handles are friction fitted with the addition of a wedge that is glued in.
Quality leather sheaths - to complete the package Oscar also makes the Italian leather sheaths. These have a welt (a leather rim sewn round the edges) with sturdy brass rivets which are much stronger than cap rivets.
Look after your tools! Spring steel needs a light coating of oil when not in use. The axe or adze will be delivered with a protective covering of oil and this should be wiped clean before first use. If striking the poll please use a wooden mallet - not steel.
