These chisels, crafted from blue steel in Japan's Sanjo region, are blacksmith-made and may require minor fettling, such as squaring the cutting edge. Once prepared, they offer lifelong durability.
A high carbon-steel edge ensures sharpness, backed by softer iron that acts as a shock absorber. The iron is folded and acid-etched to reveal a striking Damascus pattern, particularly in wider chisels.
The Suminagashi series, produced in small batches by a Niigata cooperative, features beautifully balanced red oak handles and single, double, or triple hollow ground edges based on chisel width.
The Blue Spruce honing guide is recommended for achieving a 25-degree angle when sharpening these chisels.
