This woodturning starter set from Crown Tools was created specifically for Stiles & Bates back in 2015. 

Dave Bates has now retired (2024) and is no longer selling tools as he pursues his other interests. 

So we, with Dave Bates' blessing are here to keep his starter set available - good old us eh!

This set includes a dovetail tool as this is a tool that most turners like to buy when they first get the woodturning bug.

This 7 piece set includes:

3/4'' (19mm) Spindle Roughing Gouge
3/8'' (10mm) Spindle Gouge
3/4'' (19mm) Rolled Edge Skew Chisel
1/4'' (6mm) Parting Tool
3/8'' (10mm) Short Bowl Gouge
3/4'' (19mm) Round Nose Scraper
Dovetail Tool

All supplied in a humble packing box.

M2-HSS (High Speed Steel)

Stained beech handles.

The purpose of each tool is as follows:-

Bowl Gouge - primary tool for roughing bowl blanks into shape, final shaping and hollowing bowls, dishes and platters.

Spindle Gouge - used for details such as coves and beads on spindles.

Parting Tool - used for cutting spigots, steps and parting cuts.  The 6mm parting tool included in this set is also useful for cutting small beads.

Skew Chisel - used to plane flat and convex cuts on spindles and with practice, beads (It does take practice but is worth the effort!).

Round Nose Scraper - used inside bowls but is more commonly used for hollowing the likes of eggcups and goblets as well as cutting simple coves.

Spindle Roughing Gouge - is used for roughing square spindles to round between centres - NOT for bowl work.

Dovetail Tool - will cut internal and external dovetail chuck grips on bowls and platters and external dovetail grips on spindles.
