Product Description

A hand forged, 130mm - 135mm (5 1/4'') edge side axe. LEFT grind.

The head weight is approximately 775g.

Handle - 320mm long (just over 1'') hand carved, faceted, kin dried ash handle.

The leather cover is made by Oscar using Italian leather with solid brass rivets (these are much stronger than cap rivets).

This axe has been carefully designed as an all rounder rather than just for hewing (so the handle is straight rather than being offset).

Please note each of these tools are forged, ground and handled by hand which makes each of these beautifully functional edge tools unique.

There will be slight variations between each tool which is part of their beauty but the crucial curves and alignment are consistent for each tool.

Hand forged from 070M55 steel

These tools are made in small batches by artisan blacksmith Oscar Rush.

If you miss out on a batch, please email sales@classichandtools.com and we will advise when the next batch is due (we anticipate 4 batches per annum).

These axes were made widely available through Classic Hand Tools in the spring of 2024. As anticipated, there has been strong demand world wide for these side azes and Oscar's other hand forged tools.

Apart from side axes, carving axes and small hand adzes, Classic Hand Tools have commissioned Oscar to make some other edge tools which will make their appearances later on in 2025.

"This is a superb side axe. It arrives razor sharp and, in use, proves its worth time and time again. Shaping legs for chairs and stools is simplicity itself, thanks to the weight of the head and that edge. The faceted handle ensures that one can angle the head accurately and consistently; even in prolonged use, I sustained no 'hot spots'. Even the mask is of a high quality, covering the edge safely and securely. Yes, it is an expensive piece but the thought and quality of it means that it will be an entirely dependable tool for many years - even generations - to come. There are a few tools that I look forward to using and that make me smile when I do so; this side axe is very definitely one of them."
